Wednesday 2 April 2014

March / April

Hi Everyone,

Another month has passed us by, and the excuse of a summer gone by. Perhaps we will have a lovely Autumn to make up for it, let's hope so.

New Tools in the Workshop
There are a couple of sets of alphabet and number punches in the cupboard nearest the cabinets. For all of you who want to include words on their pieces this is a great resource. There is also a set of a few shapes to add a few options.
Here are a couple of links to demonstrations that might be inspiring. The first is a tip for keeping your letters in a line. They use a weighted rawhide hammer. Our rawhide hammers are unsuitable, you need to use either the brass hammer, or one of the heavier flat hammers. We don't want to damage the faces of the planishing hammers either. Ask if you aren't sure which to use. It is much quieter for the rest of us if you use the anvil when hammering!

and here for a written article with photos. Rita Klingenberg's Jewellery Journal is quite a good resource .

Subs are Due
By now you will have received your reminder in the mail that your subscription fees are due at the start of April. Our AGM is coming up in July, and you need to have your subs up to date to be able to exercise your vote, and it is a good time to update your contact details and email addresses. Please contact Anita with your details, anitagann@yahoo.com if you haven't received the form  for your membership renewal.

Next Committee Meeting is on Monday 7th April, 7pm at our Tanner St studio. Please come along if you are interested, we would love to see you there.

Members' Workshops

This month's members' workshop is on Saturday 12th April, 10am, $20 for the day. There may be some material costs. Cora Baillie will be teaching us some wire work techniques, and you will be making a copper wire bracelet. There is a display in the guild cabinets with examples of the bracelet to have a look at.
Please contact Arthur or Tui on 382 1332 to book your place

On Saturday 17th May, Noeline will be taking a Coloured Metals workshop. She will be covering the use of coloured pencils on copper, flame colouring titanium, and ways of applying patinas. Adding colour to your metal opens up a whole new dimension to creating new designs for your jewellery.
Again you need to book with Arthur or Tui 382 1332.

Classes
Our classes have been going well. Full, and lots of lovely ideas. Gone are the days of Level One students all making variations on the fish design. They get to look at the fish and come up with their own designs, encompassing the same techniques, and often adding a few extra challenges of their own!
Take a look at these photos that Debi took.

Michele and Anita held a great workshop for us last month, thanks guys!

Enameling Workshop Report
Michele Boston
On Saturday the 15th of March, there was an enameling workshop at the Silversmiths Guild Workshop. The workshop was led by Anita Gann and Michele Boston with 6 attendees.
The day had a focus on cloisonné, but to get to setting our wires and filling the  cells we had to sift and fire the enamel base coats onto our pieces of copper.
The clear flux  base coat (there is one for silver and one for copper) is sifted onto annealed, pickled and scrubbed metal, and allowed to dry before it is fired in the kiln. Once our metal was coated both sides with the clear powdered glass we were ready to go, shaping the cloisonné wire into patterns or pictures. The wires are then placed on the flux, with an application of agar, and once completely dry are placed in the kiln again. In the kiln the wires sink slightly into the glass, with the glass sealing the cells ready for colour. Once again everything is pickled and cleaned.
The guild has a collection of enamels which are a wonderful mishmash of colors and  types, and from these we could fill in the cells with wonderful colour. To fill the cells we wet the powdered enamels, so that they could be ladled into the cells, and smoothed with a little agitation. Before they went into he kiln the enamel has to totally dry out, otherwise there is a risk of the water boiling up through the glass and creating little holes.  Once the piece is cooled and then cleaned again, the cells can be topped up as necessary with more colour until they reach the top of the cells.
We had a wonderful day with everyone completing a project or two, and hopefully confident to use the kiln at the guild.

A couple of enamelling leads for those who would like to learn more:
Linda Darty is an enamelist whose enamel book, the art of enamelling  is extremely helpful and informative. This blog has some examples of her work http://secretlifeofjewelry.blogspot.co.nz/2011/10/enamel-flowers-by-linda-darty.html
And just to tempt you,  check out some of Barbara Lewis's videos on you tube. She torch fires her
enamels, which makes the process quick and relatively easily done.

I am about to decamp to Nelson, and the delights of my daughter producing twins in a few months time, so, sadly, this is my last newsletter. I am delighted to be able to hand over to Cora, who will do a splendid job, and bring some new ideas to the newsletter as she gets to grips with the computer side of producing it. I have enjoyed being a part of your silversmithing life, and look forward to seeing you from time to time as I go backwards and forwards between Christchurch and Nelson for the next little while. Perhaps I may see some of you when you pass through Nelson too. If you want to stay in touch, my email remains the same, and I would love to hear from you.

Summary of SSG Committee meeting March 3, 2014
7 p.m. The Studio

Pressent:  Noeline, Arthur, Diederic, Sol, Karen, Jo, Leslie Marsh, Anita

Apologies:  John Weeber

New Members:  Two prospective members came to meet the committee and present examples of their work for consideration.  Both were approved for membership and will be notified by Solvejg.  Orientation plan for new members needs to be finalised and then a time set (probably Club Night or Wednesday Studio Time) to show them the studio and explain the equipment and our systems.   They need to fill out membership forms and pay after they have been notified of approval.

Minutes:  Accepted as read before the meeting.

Matters Arising:
Eftpos:  Diederic is working on getting it set up for daily use. Diederic asked again that people be told to use their surnames and a description of the purchase (membership, silver, etc.) on e-banking transactions.

Future workshops:
Enameling March 15
Wire wrapping April 12.  Sol to contact Cora to confirm date.  Also would like Cora to put examples in display cabinet.
Colours and patinas May 17, Noeline. (Arthur to get titanium).  Look for an old paper of Eddie’s on colouring copper.
Teaspoon class, Nicola, mid year.
Metal clay class, Susan Brown, Sol to contact.

AGM confirmed for July.

Correspondence:
Bethany Rogers confirmed that she will enroll for an eight week course.

Carolyn Fletcher is fund-raising for Selwyn House School at the end of April.  Asks that members contribute pieces to sell.  She can use our cabinets.  Noeline will organise.

Treasurer’s Report:
Diederic reported that our finances are healthy.

Classes Report:
Jo is doing fine with help from Jax on Wednesdays.  Yvonne and Anita are alternating with Sol Thursdays.  Sol and Debi are working well on Tuesdays.

Karen will resume working with Sol on Thursdays.  Sol will be in Europe for six weeks starting April 1.  Karen will alternate with Yvonne and Anita until she returns.

Karen will no longer hold Studio Time on alternate Saturdays.  There was very little interest by members in attending.  We will ask Crystal if she wants to take on every Saturday and if she doesn’t we will just eliminate it.  Anita’s method of sending out an email with little notice when she plans to open up for Studio Times has been working out well.   While Solvejg is away Anita will hold Weds Studio Time for the first half of April and Arthur will do it until Sol returns.

Exhibition:
Deb Smithson’s pieces from the show are still here.  Deb said we can put them into the display cabinet until she picks them up.

Noeline sent out Arts in Oxford info to the committee.  We do want to apply for a show sometime in 2015.  Noeline will start the process.

Agreement by committee that the next exhibition should be after Term 4 finishes and before Christmas.  Arthur will contact movers for an estimate on storage costs for desks, etc.  Also, maybe other tenants might be able to store them for us.

Noeline suggested that we encourage small groups of members to hold shows individually throughout the year in venues such as Art Central on Peterborough St.

General:
Diederic would like to submit a conflict resolution (or dispute resolution) proposal for the constitution to be voted on at the AGM.

Discussion about what kind of light excluding hood to install over the soldering station.  Maybe use Nicola Roakek’s “hearth” as a model.  Or possibly install a switch to dim the lights in that area.  Still needs thinking about.

The 12 year old girl who wants to learn metal working will be referred to Monique Connell at her Rose Cottage Gallery in Akaroa (Takamatua).  She is too young for our classes.

Next meeting April 7, 2014 7 p.m.

Meeting adjourned at 8:45 p.m.

Sunday 2 March 2014

February 2014 - Is that Autumn Already?

Here we all are, the beginning of March and Autumn is with us. It seems far too early for the change in temperature and the rain we have been experiencing, my tomatoes are only just starting to ripen in complete contrast to last year's bounty! Time to start thinking about the coming longer evenings and getting organized for winter.

I find my best creative time is when I find myself indoors more, cuddling up to a heater and trying to distract myself from the less clement weather. Perhaps it is because I feel so much less drawn to the outdoors, things are not growing much so they stay tidier for longer once they are done, and I do not enjoy the cold. Short, wondering moments spent looking at the sky and sea, and much more time looking inward and thinking about making little things of beauty and interesting ways to articulate them. How is it for everyone else? We are all so differently inclined and everybody's creative urges are unique.

The Guild is up and running at full speed once more, after the summer holidays and the various educational institutions have returned to their year. Plenty for you to be involved with, and we are still looking for interested folks to take up some of the tasks that make us such a great group to belong to!

We are looking for someone to:
* Take over the newsletter ( I am off to Nelson to be a granny as soon as we have bought a house)
* Take on organizing the display cabinets in the studio, as a running mini exhibition that members can participate in
* Take on keeping the supplies in the kitchen cupboard up to date - detergent, tea, coffee, toilet paper, etc
* Volunteers for the new committee, including someone to take the chair, when we have our AGM in July
* Anyone who would be interested in running a members' studio workshop in a field they are able to share some skills in, or can gather together some things to try out together. It is a great way to test-run a workshop you might want to take elsewhere as well.

Of course, we are not looking for one poor soul to take on all those areas! Just whatever you think is manageable, and dare we say it, perhaps enjoy doing so! It is a great way to meet people, try out some ideas, and learn some new skills. I have found sharing some of my own knowledge and skills has been a really enjoyable process, and I have grown in a way I would not have had I not screwed up my courage and said 'yes'.

Open Times for the Studio
For members, $10, or $8 with a concession ticket
Tuesday
Anita is opening up at 10am - 2pm

Take a look at Jeremy's report on last month's workshop. It sounded as if it was its usual exciting self, I am sad I couldn't be in two places at once :( Thanks for the article, Jeremy.

SilverSmiths Guild Casting Workshop
Heads down and hard at work
On Saturday the 15th of February the SilverSmiths Guild held a casting workshop, with a focus on cuttlefish and Delft Clay casting. The course was led by Arthur (Harrison).
7 people attended the workshop with bags of scrap metal in their hands, ready to be recycled in to new silver jewellery. They brought a variety of items they wanted to make casts from including plastic monkeys, metal fish and rings, with some just wanting to use the visual affect of the natural contours of cuttlefish.

Preparing the cuttlefish

With cuttlefish casting we learnt how to make blank moulds by sanding 2 cuttlefish flat, to get a good fit between them. An item could then be pressed in to the two halves for an impression to allow a silver copy to be made, or the cuttlefish could be cut into, to create an original design, whilst making sure the two halves were marked for matching up. We learnt the importance of plenty of air holes to ensure the mould completely filled with the molten silver; although some times the lack of air holes provided a great effect. With a sprue cut the cuttlefish were ready for casting.
Melting silver in a crucible
Scrap silver was heated until the molten silver glowed and with a sprinkle of borax it was poured in to the mould. After cooling in a bucket of water, the mould could be pulled apart to reveal the result, ready to have the sprue removed and made in to a finished piece of jewellery.
A bit fuzzy, but you get the idea

Cast ring shanks

With Delft Clay casting, 2 metal rings are used to make the moulds from. A lower ring was filled with compacted clay, with the help of a hammer tap. The item from which a cast was to be made was pressed into the lower mould to about half-way in. The second ring was placed on top; talc was dusted on the clay and item to be copied in the lower mould, before more clay was compacted to fill the moulds, which were levelled off with a ruler. Separating the rings revealed the 2 halves of the moulds from which the original could now be removed. Air holes were made in the bottom mould and in the top half a hole for the molten silver to enter. With the 2 halves put back together a conical sprue was made in the top, through which the molten silver was poured.
The messy end of Delft Clay
After some cooling in a bucket of water, and a bit more patience than cuttlefish, the 2 halves were separated and the sand removed to reveal the newly cast item ready to be cleaned up.

Cheeky Monkey! Remember that Barrel of Monkeys game we used to play?

Fish cast from a polymer clay model

Issues with air not escaping, but good detail

So after an enjoyable day’s workshop we all ended up with the knowledge of how to cast with cuttlefish and Delft clay, some great new pieces of jewellery and a bunch of new friends!
Photos and words from Jeremy Reece :)

Summary of Committee Meeting of SSG

Febraury 3rd 2014,
7pm at The Studio
39c Tanner St

Present:
Noeline Walker, Crystal Mathison, Solvejg and Diederic Ruarus, Jo Crompton, Debi James, Jenni Downs

Apologies:
John Weeber, Arthur Harrison, Anita Parris, Karen Atherton

Previous minutes taken as read.

Correspondence:
Kobi Bosshard sent us a postcard thanking us for payment for the masterclass he held for us last year, and expressing his desire to hold another masterclass at a later date.

Treasurer’s Report:
The accounts are looking healthy.
The Exhibition in December 2013 ran at a small shortfall, which is what we expected with the smaller commission on sales charged this time. The commission will return to 20% next time. The EFTPOS machine proved to be a success. Diederic has looked into using one for all our silver sales during the year.
Agreed unanimously to proceed with this.

Class Report:
Term 1
Tuesday – Level 1;   14 enrolled
Wednesday – Level 2; 14 enrolled
Thursday Morning – Level 1;  7 enrolled
                    - Level 2;   6 enrolled
No advertising has been needed apart from contacting the data base to top up the Wednesday evening class. There was a bit of interest generated from the exhibition in December.
Noeline has expanded the class handouts with a bit of help from Jo.
Silver stock has been topped up and everything has been bagged and made into unit items. This will simplify things for the tutors when selling silver.

Membership:
Membership stands at 61 at present

Exhibition:
We had a turnout of 60 to 70 people over the opening night, and a small but fairly steady flow of visitors over the following week. We had quite a few obstacles to deal with with all the road works and lack of signage at the time, so not too bad.
Discussion about space allocation for members next time we hold an exhibition. Maybe we need to give an allowance in cm2 to deal with pieces that take up more space, rather than a limit on the number of pieces.

We want to make the cabinets available for members to use, perhaps hiring them out. This will be explored further. There are breakages and insurance to consider

Is it possible to organise a static display of some work for libraries?

Is there the possibility of holding another exhibition around mid-winter?

General Business:
Diederic has approached Woodplus regarding fixing the cupboard door that has come adrift, and a quote for building a cupboard around the vacuum cleaner under the polisher to reduce noise levels. Also to come up with a cover or hood for the solder stations to reduce light interference when soldering.
We are going to have to deal with the solder station ourselves.

We need to be looking to the membership for new people to become involved on the committee. We will need a Newsletter Editor, and someone to take over the Chairman ship at the next AGM as well.

Classes – New Tutor training
Tuesdays: Debi James is helping Sol out. Karen is recovering from some surgery to her shoulder.
Wednesdays: Jax is helping Jo out
Thursdays: Anita and Yvonne are alternating weeks, helping Sol out.
Arthur is away, but will be available if needed.

Casting Workshop:
February's members’ workshop is cuttlefish and delft clay casting. Arthur will be here to run that.

AGM
Our annual general meeting will be held in July this year. Financial members are able to vote, and membership renewals are due on 1st April to coincide with the financial year.
We are looking for new committee members. Jo is moving to Nelson, John Weeber is moving to Golden Bay, and Arthur is required to step down from the chairmanship after 4 years in a row. We may need to approach people to think about becoming committee members.
We have had a rolling mill donated by Jeremy Harding, which Anita collected and has stored in her garage until we can make room for it in the studio here.

Member Workshops:
Suggestions:
Cora has offered to run a wire wrapped bracelet made in copper. She has also suggested she could hold a Fancy Chain and Maille workshop, and put together a couple of suggested lesson plans for that.
Anita and Michel will run an enamelling workshop again
The colouring metals workshop was a success and Noeline has explored the use of coloured pencils further, so it might be a good one to repeat. Including the use of titanium, and different patinas for copper and silver.
Perhaps Nicola could be approached for a small spoon making day
PMC with Susan Brown might be a possibility
It may be possible to organise a ‘Taking good photographs of your jewellery” day. Noeline has a photography DVD which could be useful
Jax could be approached about doing a workshop around drilling holes in stones and different ways of combining them with silver?
Would Sylvia be interested in sharing her non-toxic photo etching process?
Further discussion and ideas

We need a contact details and course dates card for the window so people can reach us when the studio is closed.

Arthur is approaching Avon Engineering to see if they can put together a list of tools and prices. It would be good to be able to source some tools that members can buy locally. The list could be displayed in the studio.

The fire alarm needs a new battery.

Gordon Harris will take some of our course fliers.

Crystal will continue to work on the bookmark and postcards for us, and do a contact card for the window.

Get well cards for John Weeber, John Ogilvie, and Karen Atherton.

Sol will open the studio on Wednesdays, 10am – 3pm.

A Cleaning Roster will be organised.

Instructions for the keypad have been put on the wall for reference.

Meeting closed at 8.30pm

Monday 27 January 2014

Welcome to 2014

Here we are, halfway through January of our new year already! I hope you have all had an enjoyable break full of happy times with families and friends, good food, fun conversations, and lots of sunshine and relaxation as we head towards a busy 2014. How are all your plans looking?

I bet there are already a bunch of abandoned resolutions lying scattered in your wake! Regardless, I am looking forward to a new bunch of experiences and explorations, both in my everyday life, and my creative journey.

I have already had a play with making some spinner rings at one of our days we opened up the studio. I have been meaning to have a go at these for a while now, and have learned a few things trying them out.
Needless to say, my joins need work, they really feel the strain when stretched out as I expand the edges to contain the spinny bit of the ring. Then there is the accidental tightening up that occurred as I got over enthusiastic with my metal moving! Actually, I think there is potential here for a bit of further exploration. That is how it goes, more ideas from random 'mistakes'!!

Have you spotted any of our members in the world of art over the holidays? You lot are very quiet about what you get up to out there! Let me know and I can give you a wee bit of a promotion...

What have you been thinking about? We are keen to hear what you would like to have in the members' monthly workshops this year. If there is something you think you would like to learn, and/or teach, please get in touch with Arthur craftyart2002@yahoo.co.nz. We had some fun collaborative workshops last year, such as the enameling workshop Michel Boston and Anita Parris took. It is a exciting sharing new skills, and might be a good way to test run a workshop you go on to share elsewhere as well. Whatever you have in mind, please let us know so we can get the calendar sorted.
Getting ready for the start of the year - our version of rolling up your sleeves!

Our first committee meeting of the year is on Monday 3rd February, at 7pm in our Studio. Please come along if you would like to.

Classes start up Tuesday 4th, Wednesday 5th, and Thursday 13th February.

The first members' monthly workshop is on Saturday February 15th, 10am. We will be doing cuttlefish casting and using the Delft Clay as well, so get all your scrap together and book your place by ringing Arthur or Tui on 3821332. $20 for the day.

We also need you to be thinking about how you can help out in the guild later this year. We hold our annual AGM around July, and this will involve the election of new committee members and a new chairperson. Arthur has done an amazing job holding us all together over the earthquake aftermath, and getting us a established in our new studio workshop, and will continue to be available to help us in all sorts of ways. Our constitution rules that no-one should hold the chairperson seat for longer than 3 consecutive years. Arthur has  been doing this for 4, unusually demanding, years, and it is time for somebody new to step up and take those reins. Please think about how you can help out, it is a really rewarding committee to work in, and there are such a lot of opportunities for the guild to grow and develop further.

I am still looking for someone to take over the newsletter. We are planning a move to Nelson this year, and it would be good to be able to show someone how this blog/newsletter works before I am too far away to do so easily. It isn't difficult once you get the hang of it, and you might get really excited about making one of your own in the process! It is possible to share the editing with someone else if I set things up to do so, so you don't have to go 'cold turkey'! Go on, there must be someone keen to give it a shot! Contact me joannacrompton@gmail.com even if you just want to ask me something about it.

John Weeber and family are also moving away, to sunny Golden Bay, so he will no longer be here to be on our committee and help out with workshops and lending a hand. John has been our resident Delft Clay, and lost wax support person/technician/expert, so we will especially miss his presence when we run these workshops. He ran a memorable found object weekend where we had a very windy day at Birdlings Flat collecting all manner of finds, followed by a creative day in the workshop at SIT conjuring up some really lovely wearable art! Perhaps we can persuade him to come back to Christchurch from time to time... We wish you all the best John.

A wide range of work was on display.
Our Members' Exhibition was a great week of showing off some of our work, getting together to celebrate a whole year at Tanner St, and meeting old and new friends who managed to find us and drop in for a visit. A good effort foreshadowing many more to come! Thanks to everyone who worked so hard to get it up and going, and everyone who exhibited, came along, and sent their good wishes if they couldn't get there.
Gems from John Ogilvie's collection

There is such a wide range of styles, skills, and ideas amongst us. We had many people admiring our work, some old members who were inspired to renew their memberships, and lots of interested prospective students. I think our classes for the first term this year are pretty full already as a result.
